A Brief History: Valentine's day is celebrated every 14th of February and people exchange gifts, chocolates, and flowers. It's named after Saint Valentine. There are many legends about how the day came to be. One popular story is that Valentine was a priest in Rome who continued to secretly marry couples during the time when Emperor Claudius outlawed marriage for young men. The Christian church put a celebration feast on the ides of February, the 15th. However, this was later changed by a pope to the 14th. The French and English in the Middle Ages associated this day with the start of the birds' mating season, hence the idea of romance. The day is celebrated around the world today in many countries including Mexico, Australia, France, and the UK.
